#15. Diamonds: A Girl’s Vest End
This weekend, you’ll be Benjamin Buttoned right back to the yarn ball.
Today, the sun is shining, it’s a crip three degrees Celsius, and the sky is blue. Enjoy it, Diamonds Vest, because, this weekend, you’ll be Benjamin Buttoned right back to the yarn ball. Frogged. Unknit.
You, Diamonds Vest, have been a big, frustrating, long project and because you’re knit bottom up (think hem to shoulder) you gave this novice knitter a disillusioned hope that maybe it would all work out. Maybe it was normal to begin the armholes at the belly button. Maybe it was normal when the first three inches of impeccable diamond patterning started melting into itself like ice cream in August as I muddled through decreases.
If I could actually figure out this pattern, its probably marvelous. The dazzling diamond pattern is made with beginner stitches of knits and purls. In theory its easy. But perhaps like a real diamond, the cost of this project outweighs the value. It’s not for me.
Back to the yarn ball with this one.
So, what’s next?
Something basic like a gorgeous golden yarn knit into a quick cowl. Start to finish in two weeks. No Diamonds anything. I’ll consider it the wedding band to the Diamonds Vest and, with confidence, I can say: “I do…want to knit that.”
Evidence of what could have been but is so far from actually being. Diamonds Vest is my made-up name for this pattern, because I know this pattern doesn’t deserve to be stomped over when a knitter with more skill can surely make one in their sleep. But for me, it gets a warning note in the top corner of my pattern book: stay away! This vest is not your friend.
